The Fashion Industry’s New Paradigm
It started with a dream, an idea, a ticket, and a fearless disposition. The Dream: Bring environmental issues to a wider audience. The Idea: Combine sustainable development and design in an authentic, thought-provoking manner. The Ticket: An $86 round trip bus ticket to NYC that started an unexpected fashion career. The Disposition: Don’t take “No” for an answer.
Little did I know that my journey to combine the disparate worlds of Fashion and Environment would be more than fulfilling – it would ultimately lead to the creation of a new fashion paradigm and a different way of looking at the world.
I began modeling in 2001 with the idea that I would align myself with companies, brands, programs and projects that share my values. It was an idea that came to me as I was knee-deep in my environmental studies at college. I set out on the journey and it began to flourish. The idea of exclusively working with brands that are aligned with a more environmental mission was unique. The press began referring to me as, The World’s First Eco-Model, and like most nicknames – it stuck.
I’ve since embraced the idea and never expected it to flourish the way that it has. I feel very fortunate to work with, what I believe, are some of the most amazing companies, programs and designers both behind-the-scenes as an Advisor and in front of the camera as a Model and Spokesperson.
What’s totally cool is that I don’t need to compromise my values. My work is exclusively aligned with values-based, cause-related endeavors, which means that I can effectively work with companies, brands, programs, and projects to help them become better stewards and assist them in capturing the essence of what it means to be more environmentally- and socially-conscious. Most of all, however, I get to represent and work with people that I believe in. That in turn gives me the time and the capacity to continue to do what I originally set out to do: Bring environmental issues to a wider audience.
